Barcode and Label Placement on Packaging
Mark barcode and shipping-label positions on the dieline before artwork approval. Printed barcode changes after plate-making may require a new plate; confirm cost and timing in the quote.
For packaging developers preparing retail artwork, whether or not the retailer has sent a pack spec. The buyer supplies market and retailer marks that share panel space with the barcode, checks the applicable GS1 quiet-zone minimum and signs off the selected positions on the dieline.
Choosing the Panels
This is a decision about panels, not a rule to memorise. Three questions settle most of it.
Then check what the position has to stay clear of: fold lines, creases, glue seams, a window, and any area that a handle or ribbon crosses.

What the Artwork File Needs to Carry
Barcode type (for example EAN-13 or UPC-A) and the size it will print at. The quiet zone the code needs depends on that type and size, and the GS1 figure for it is the one to check against.
Confirm the number itself on the proof.
The quiet zone is the blank margin a scanner needs on each side of the bars to find where the code starts and stops. It is part of the code rather than spare space around it, and artwork that crops it is a common way a technically correct barcode stops working.
GS1 publishes the minimum quiet zone for each barcode type in the GS1 General Specifications.
The retailer’s own quiet-zone or placement requirement if you have one. Meet the applicable GS1 minimum for the barcode type and any additional or stricter retailer rule; resolve a conflict before artwork approval.
Label size, and where your fulfilment applies it. Draw the label area on your artwork as an unprinted box, so the dieline shows which panel it falls on and whether it crosses a fold or seam.
What Goes Wrong, and Where It Shows
That is the line worth knowing. Most of what the structure causes shows on the flat, before any plate exists, which is the cheapest point to change it.
A barcode across a crease.
It will not scan reliably once the box is formed. You see it when you lay your artwork over the dieline, before any plate is made, while it is still cheap to move.
A label placed over a window.
Same: you see it on the flat, and it is cheap to move before plate-making.
A cropped quiet zone.
If a fold, glue seam or panel edge cuts into it, you see that too when you lay the artwork over the dieline.
If the artwork file itself draws the margin too narrow for the barcode type and size, the dieline will not show it; only a check against the GS1 or retailer spec does, and the cheapest time for that check is before you send the file as print-ready.
A retailer requirement discovered after the run.
Nothing on the dieline shows this, because the requirement lives in the retailer’s spec. Ask your buyer for their pack spec while artwork is still open.
What the flat cannot show is a panel that bows once the product is inside, so scan the code on the sample, with the product packed, before you approve it. If that scan matters, ask at quoting stage for the sample to carry the final printed artwork.
Artwork-visible placement issues are cheapest to fix before plate-making. A panel that bows only after filling needs a separate scan on the packed sample before bulk approval.
If printed barcode data or placement changes after plate-making, a replacement plate may be needed; ask for its tooling cost and revised schedule on the quotation. Moving an applied shipping label or changing a window involves different work, so the printing-plate assumption does not apply. A defect discovered after printing may require a reprint.

A scanner reads contrast. Dark bars on a light, uninterrupted ground scan most reliably. Bars in red, orange or yellow, or light bars on a dark ground, are the combinations that commonly fail even when the artwork looks clear, so settle the code colour against the GS1 guidance or your retailer’s spec.
